Aphrodisiac

In some cases the use was based on a mis-interpretation of the name of the plant in another language. The plant Levisticum palaudapifolium was called Ligysticon by Dioscorides because of its Ligurian origin. Galen modified the name to Libysticon, which later was transformed into the German names Liebesstückel, Liebstock, etc. The meaning of the prefix "Lieb-", i.e. love, then gave rise to its use as an aphrodisiac

Love, Amore, Lust, Infatuation, Twitterpated, and Chocolate go hand and hand.  Chocolate's reputation as an Aphrodisiac originated over 1,500 years ago.  Mayan and Aztec cultures revered Chocolate as having  aphrodisiac qualities   The Aztec emperor, Monteczuma is rumored to drink  fifty golden goblets of chocolate a day to enhance his sexual prowess.  Could this be where giving Chocolates on Valentines Day started.
All of us know someone who Craves Chocolate.   Absolutely has to have it.   Chocolate has been found to contain substances called Phenylethylamine and Seratonin,  both of which (put simply), are mood lifting agents. What happens when women have Pre Menstrual Syndrome, women will crave chocolate, to lift the mood, and relieve the tension.   The constituents both occur naturally in the human brain and are released by the brain into the nervous system when we are happy and also when we are experiencing feelings of love, craze, or desire This causes a rapid mood change, a rise in blood pressure, increasing the heart rate and inducing those feelings of well being, bordering on euphoria usually associated with being in love.
Eating chocolate also releases Phenylethylamine and Seratonin into the system, producing those same euphoric effects. This phenomenon has been scientifically observed, so it's not unreasonable to assume that it's probably these effects which gave rise to chocolates reputation as an aphrodisiac. Both these substances can also be mildly addictive, explaining why chocoholics are chocoholics. Plus eating Chocolate gives an immediate and substantial energy boost thus increasing stamina.

Chilies, curries, and other spicy foods have been viewed as aphrodisiacs because their physiological effects--a raised heart rate and sometimes sweating--are similar to the physical reactions experienced during sex. And some foods were glorified as aphrodisiacs based on their rarity and mystery.

Many ancient peoples believed in the so-called "law of similarity," reasoning that an object resembling genitalia may possess sexual powers. Ginseng, rhinoceros horn, and oysters are three classical examples. Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of sexual love and beauty. She is also associated with the sea and, according to legend, was born of sea foam arising from the genitals of Uranus. Sparta, Thebes, and Cyprus honored her as a goddess of war. Many scholars believe that her cult is Semitic rather than Greek in origin. According to Homer, she was the daughter of Zeus and his consort Dione, and she married Hephaestus, but betrayed him with Ares. She had many mortal lovers. Her main centers of worship were on the islands of Cyprus and Cythera and at Corinth. As a fertility goddess, she is associated with Eros, the Graces, and the Horae (seasons). Venus is her Roman counterpart Aphrodite was said to be born from the sea, many types of seafood have reputations as aphrodisiacs.  Oysters are particularly esteemed as sex aids, possibly gaining their reputation at a time when their contribution of zinc to the nutritionally deficient diets of the day could improve overall health and so lead to an increased sex drive.

The word ginseng means "man root," and the plant's reputation as an aphrodisiac probably arises from its marked similarity to the human body. Ginseng has been looked on as an invigorating and rejuvenating agent for centuries in China, Tibet, Korea, Indochina, and India. The root may have a mild stimulant action, like coffee.

The similarity of the shape of the rhinoceros horn to the penis is credited for its worldwide reputation as a libido enhancer. The horn contains significant amounts of calcium and phosphorus. The addition of the food to a deficient diet could improve general physical vigor and possibly lead to an increased sexual interest. But in most Americans' diets, which are usually not lacking calcium or phosphorus, the small quantities usually consumed would not affect physical performance.
