Erectile Dysfunction: Facts and Fallacies
Only recently did the medical community realize how prevalent

In order for an erection to occur, a "pro-erection" chemical,

an "anti-erection" enzyme (phosphodiesterase type-5, or "PDE-5")
which breaks down Cyclic GMP. Furthermore, there must be sufficient
quantities of nitric oxide available for the Cyclic GMP
to do its stuff. When there is more Cyclic GMP in the penis
than there is PDE-5, and nitric oxide is present in sufficient
 quantities, and given sufficient sexual arousal (which causes
a local release of nitric oxide), an erection occurs. The reason
for this is that Cyclic GMP is essentially a gate-keeper for blood
entering the penis. When Cyclic GMP is present in high proportion to its
antagonist enzyme, AND nitric oxide is present, the arteries to t
he penis dilate, the penis becomes engorged with blood and
the force of turgor causes it to stiffen. Key to this system is
the fact that when the arteries to the penis are open (dilated),
the veins that draw blood away are pinched shut, otherwise
 blood would leave just as quickly as it enters and turgor would not build.
